Move to Chos Malal.
The route from Malargue to the Chilean border is paved, and the section of Route 40 in that area is also paved. However, the section of Route 40 that continues south from there is unpaved for about 100 kilometers. There are no towns nearby, and the next town of any significant size is Chos Malal.

Chain trouble in the unpaved section of Route 40.
On National Route 40, a 100km unpaved section, the chain came off... But one after another, cars stopped and lent me tools, and one of them was knowledgeable about motorcycles and even adjusted the chain. Argentina is amazing!
