Moose (on Nabesna Road) - Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.
Caribou Creek Trail - Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.
I went to Caribou Creek Trail.
Caribou Creek Trail has river crossings. However, it seems like a waste of effort to take your shoes off and cross the rivers (apparently there are a maximum of 4 rivers), and the goal is right there, so I decided to follow the riverbank up to the hill and turn back, feeling satisfied. That was enough.
It seems like you can cross the rivers without taking off your shoes during seasons with less water, but either it was a certain season or it had rained, so the water level was high.

I am currently considering what to do next.
If I were to go to McCarthy and Kennicott, which are located along the highway and have glaciers and mine sites, I would have to drive about 60 miles (about 100 km) on a rough road. Recently, it has been raining, and I received information from a park ranger that the road is so bad that 4WD vehicles have recently gotten stuck. It is recommended to have a manual transmission 4WD vehicle with high ground clearance. Based on this information, I determined that I could not go there with the automatic transmission sedan I am currently renting, so I decided to go by shuttle. The rental car company is cheap, but they prohibit driving on dirt roads.
The price is relatively high, at USD 150 for a round trip, but it is what it is in the United States and Alaska.
The national park I am currently in is one of the largest, and I would like to see the huge glaciers from an airplane, but that is quite expensive, so I will have to put it off for this time.
I feel like I have only seen a small part of Alaska, but perhaps that is to be expected with a one-month stay.

We have arrived at the copper mining town of Kennecott.
In English, "bonanza" means a big profit. There is a "Bonanza Mine" here, and it actually made a profit of 100 million dollars at the time. It was truly a huge success. JP Morgan, a famous wealthy person, has many villas around here. Apparently, he is the one who invested and made a huge profit. It is amazing that they made enough profit to build a 20-mile (320 km) railway for 20 million dollars at the time.
It's a story with a completely different scale, but I was shocked to hear that the engineers' salaries were about 5 dollars a day, which is equivalent to 70-100 USD in today's value. It's really tough to be a subcontractor or an employee. This place, which has seen so much, is now a forgotten and lonely village.
People involved in plants might want to visit once. You can see the cutting-edge plants of the past.
By the way, the road to get here was not that bad because it was sunny, but it might be different if it rains. In Bolivia or Peru, it would be considered a normal road, but in the United States, it might be called a bad road.

Kennecott Concentration Mill exterior - Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.
The copper refinery plant is a 14-story wooden building dating back 100 years. It is said to be the largest wooden building in North America.
It is interesting to think that this was a state-of-the-art factory 100 years ago. You can only enter for tours, but it was interesting with the explanations.
The plant and the white mountain in the background.
This town is said to have held 20% of the population of Alaska 100 years ago.
I can imagine the prosperity of that time.
It is also interesting that the town had a cafeteria for employees, and that all the cooks were Japanese.
I mentioned to the ranger that the cook, Minami, who appears in the Alaska story featuring Frank Aneta, might have moved here after the gold mine closed down. The ranger seemed interested. I was surprised that all the cooks were Japanese.

The interior will be described in the next article.

Today, I went to the Jumbo mine, which is located on top of a mountain. It's an interesting place.
There are cables left over from transporting stones. The base is made of wood!
There are also remnants of what appear to be buildings.
One-way distance is 5 miles (8 km), starting altitude is 650m, destination altitude is 1750m, altitude difference is 1100m, 3 hours for the outbound journey, 2 hours and 15 minutes for the return journey, total 6 hours.
The mine shaft was blocked. It's dangerous.
The base is made of wood. The cables are still there.
Around the year 1880, people were said to have been transported in baskets!
The cables are connected from right next to the mine shaft to a plant in town. There are two cables, and it seems that there were many more mine shafts, but tunnels were dug to the nearest one, and stones were transported by a trolley, then put into a basket and transported by cable. It's amazing.

Bonanza Copper Mine - Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.
Today, I went hiking to the Bonanza mine. Since this is the original mine, the facilities are quite well-maintained. I am satisfied.
The Bonanza mine is located in a place with a very good view.
It is amazing that they built a wooden structure and a mine shaft at an altitude of 1800m.
The one-way trip took 3 hours, the return trip took a little over 2 hours, for a total of about 6 hours. The altitude of the building is 1800m, the altitude of the observation point on top of the building is 1820m, and the altitude of the starting point is 650m, for a total altitude difference of 1150m.
The word "bonanza" in English means "a big profit," and it seems that they indeed made a lot of money here. The names of famous companies like JP Morgan can be seen.

Root Glacier - Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.
Today, I went to see the Root Glacier.
It is huge, and it feels like it is moving slowly, or rather, it has cracks in it, and you can hear a "piki piki" sound, which is very real.
It is a place that makes you wonder if the Earth is alive.
